Designation of Natura 2000 Sites by NPWS
There is a requirement under European and National laws to conserve habitats and species, through designation of conservation areas (Natura 2000 sites). National Parks and Wildlife Service is responsible for the designation of conservation sites in Ireland.
Using scientific data, Conservation Objectives in respect of each of the designated features and protected species in each Natura 2000 site are set by NPWS. These objectives are used when carrying out assessments of fishing activities that might impact on designated sites.
